The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for greed in this director's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, though Chastain succeeds to show the character as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4
