The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
