Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
