Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
